How Long Does a Root Canal Last?

How Long Does a Root Canal

If your dentist has suggested a root canal to fix your dental problem, you might be wondering what you are getting into. Understanding how long a treatment option might last is an essential factor in your final decision. Before deciding on a root canal, discuss with your dentist how long your root canal might last.

The Life Span of a Root Canal

According to a 2021 report, 98 percent of root canals last at least one year, 92 for at least five years, and 86 percent last ten years or longer. However, some say that teeth can last at least ten years after a root canal, but only if the patient makes an effort to extend its lifespan. Others say that root canals are very successful treatments for tooth infections and can often last a lifetime.

Some signs of a failed root canal include the following:

  • Tooth sensitivity or pain when biting down on something
  • A boil or pimple on the jaw
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Pain from pressure in the tooth with the root canal
  • Tenderness in the gum tissue near the root canal
  • Pain in the treated tooth

If you notice any of these signs or other concerning symptoms, it’s imperative to contact your dentist right away.

Frequently Asked Questions about Root Canals

Are there Alternative Treatment Choices to a Root Canal?

Suppose you decide not to have a root canal performed. In that case, the only other alternatives are natural tooth loss or having your dentist remove the infected or damaged tooth. Keep in mind that a lost or pulled tooth will leave a noticeable space in your smile, which will then allow any adjacent teeth to move out of alignment in an effort to close that gap.

As such, you may not be able to chew food properly, which can even result in digestion problems. Misaligned teeth are also harder to clean, putting you at higher risk of tooth decay or gum disease and causing even more problems that can be painful and expensive to treat.

What Can You Do to Avoid the Need for a Future Root Canal?

Avoiding the need for a root canal starts with avoiding tooth decay. The best way to prevent tooth decay is to perform excellent oral hygiene every day, including brushing and flossing. Staying away from foods high in sugar and acidic beverages such as fruit juices and soda can also help protect your teeth from decay.

Additionally, you should visit your regular dentist at least once per year, ideally twice per year, so that they can assess and clean your teeth. As an extra precaution, most dental professionals recommend wearing a custom-made mouthguard whenever you're playing sports or doing anything that poses a risk of injury to your teeth.
