When it comes to keeping our teeth healthy, we’re all familiar with the basics: brush after meals and before bedtime, floss daily and visit the dentist every six months for a checkup and professional cleaning. Most people also know that it’s important to steer clear of certain types of foods that can lead to tooth decay like sugary foods and snacks. It is not widely known however, that the antioxidants and other nutrients found in some foods can help keep teeth healthy and strong. Here are a few foods that are good for your teeth that you should consider eating more of if you’re not already doing so.

Fruits and Vegetables Rich in Fiber

Foods that are rich in fiber stimulate the production of saliva which is a natural defense against tooth decay. Saliva flushes away food particles and quickly begins to neutralize the acids attacking your teeth soon after you eat. By eating crispy fruits and vegetables like apples, pears, carrots and celery every day, you can protect your teeth against decay.

Cheese, Milk & Plain Yogurt

Cheese, milk and plain yogurt are loaded with calcium, phosphates and Vitamin D which are all important minerals that keep your teeth healthy. When you eat calcium-rich foods, the calcium mixes with plaque and sticks to your teeth to protect them from harmful acid attacks that cause decay while helping to rebuild enamel immediately.

Green and Black Teas

Tea contains bacteria-suppressing compounds that help protect teeth from decay. Researchers have found that drinking three cups of tea per day can help keep the teeth healthy by fighting two specific types of bacteria – Streptococcus and Lactobacillus which are both associated with tooth decay and gum disease.

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are packed with nutrients which are good for your teeth like magnesium, phosphorous, potassium, calcium and zinc. The best nuts to eat which are full of decay-fighting calcium are almonds and Brazil nuts. Sesame seeds are very high in calcium and these tiny white seeds also help remineralize the enamel on teeth. Sunflower and pumpkin seeds are good sources of Vitamin E. This important vitamin contains antioxidant properties that help fight gum disease that if left untreated, can lead to serious problems with the teeth including infection and tooth loss.
