Holiday Oral Care Tips

The holidays are just around the corner, and while we know many of our patients are looking forward to some time spent reconnecting with friends, family, and loved ones, the holiday season is often a time when oral care suffers. At the office of Drs. Acker, Lehninger, and Holbrook, our mission is to help patients throughout the Venice, FL area achieve healthy, beautiful smiles through comprehensive dental care. And to help you protect your smile through the holiday season, we'd like to offer a few tips for maintaining strong oral hygiene during the holidays.

Tips for Oral Hygiene During the Holidays

Whether you're planning a trip, hosting a family gathering, or looking forward to any other holiday festivities, it's easy to let oral hygiene fall by the wayside in the excitement of the holidays. But oral hygiene is more important now than ever – so here are some tips to help you protect your smile this year:

  • Never Compromise on Brushing & Flossing: First things first – brushing and flossing are the foundations of a healthy smile, so it's vital that you brush and floss twice a day, every day, even during the holidays. Setting an intention to maintain this ritual no matter how busy you may feel is a great way to keep your smile healthy amidst the festivities.
  • Pick Up Some Mouthwash: Even with a solid brushing schedule, the foods we love to enjoy during the holidays can put extra strain on tooth enamel. To counteract this, invest in a portable bottle of mouthwash and use it to rinse your mouth after eating or drinking anything.
  • Avoid Sticky Snacks: Whether it's candy or dried fruit, many popular holiday snacks are gooey and stick to the teeth, which can accelerate dental decay. Protect yourself by avoiding sticky snacks and instead choosing food that won't cling to the teeth.
  • Limit Tooth-Staining Drinks: What you eat isn't the only thing that affects your teeth during the holidays – what you drink matters as well. And the best way to protect your smile is to avoid drinks that can stain your teeth, so this year, limit your intake of red wine, tea, cranberry juice, and other drinks that can discolor teeth.
