Options For Replacing Missing Teeth

Following a dental injury, you may be shocked and worried upon realizing that one or more of your teeth have been knocked out. Missing teeth have been known to cause health issues, as your other teeth now have to make up for the work of your missing tooth/teeth causing additional wear and tear. Cosmetically speaking, many people with missing teeth will even have trouble smiling with their lips parted or without covering their mouth. Luckily, we are in a day and age where missing teeth do not have to be a permanent condition. Our doctors specialize in dental reconstruction and work tirelessly to bring back the function and beautiful aesthetic of your smile!

If I Lose A Tooth, What Can I Do?

Whether it be due to age or accident, there are many options you can take to replace missing teeth, including, but not limited to:

  • Dental Implants – A dental implant is essentially a replacement tooth root, as it looks like a screw made of titanium metal that goes into the empty tooth socket. Once placed, the jawbone and surrounding gums will heal and secure the implant in place. After the healing process has been completed, your dentist will place the false tooth onto the dental “root” and orient your new tooth in place. Soon, you’ll experience easier eating, improved speech, and overall a better smile!
  • Dentures & Partials – Dentures are perfect for those who have many missing teeth. Our team will create a perfectly molded set of teeth that match the coloring of your natural teeth. Depending on the structure of your missing teeth and your oral health, we’ll be able to advise you on whether removable partial/complete dentures or implant removable partial/complete dentures are the best option for you!
  • Bridges – A bridge is a three-part structure that is made up of a prosthetic tooth that takes the place of a missing tooth and is fastened with two crowns (or tooth caps) that are at either side of the prosthetic tooth, hence—making a bridge. This treatment is ideal for those who have a missing tooth whose neighboring teeth have been damaged, but not lost i.e. chipped, broken, etc. The crown will protect the damaged tooth and the bridge will replace the missing tooth.

If you’ve suffered an emergency accident that knocked out your tooth and don’t know what to do, please remain calm and adhere to the following instructions:

  1. Find and pick up the knocked-out tooth by the crown and not by the root as this can compromise the condition of the living dental tissue found in the root of your tooth.
  2. If you have any latex gloves handy in your emergency kit, please put them on and rinse off the root carefully with water (don’t scrub or remove anything attached!).
    1. If possible, gently insert the tooth facing the correct way and hold it back in its place.
    2. If not possible, drop the tooth in a container of milk (or salt water if you don’t have milk).
  3. Take your tooth and get to our office as quickly as possible—time is of the essence as dental experts believe the best chance of reattaching the tooth happens within the first hour!
