Halloween is just around the corner, and we know that kids (and maybe even some adults too!) everywhere are getting excited for a night of spooky fun – but unfortunately, some Halloween traditions can do a number on teeth! While it may seem innocent, the Halloween ritual of gorging on sugary candy can promote cavities and tooth decay. As a dental provider serving the Venice, FL area, we at the office of Drs. Acker & Lehninger wanted to provide some tips so you can make this Halloween a little easier on the teeth.

Halloween Tooth Health Tips

For many kids, indulging in sweets and candies is an annual Halloween ritual. While it'd be best for teeth to steer clear of candy altogether, we know that for many children, that just seems a little cruel – so here's how to take part in the festivities while minimizing damage to teeth:

  • Cleanse the Candy Stash: When it comes to dental health, not all candy is created equal. Try to avoid, in particular, any candy that's sticky, gummy, or gooey, as this can cling to the teeth and create more sugar contact, facilitating more decay.
  • Keep It to One Night: This may seem counterintuitive, but when it comes to the health of teeth, it's best to minimize the amount of time spent eating candy. For this reason, it's better to let a child feast on their candy the night of Halloween, then toss the rest. This prevents long-term exposure to sugar and acids and promotes healthier teeth in the long-run.
  • Brush & Floss: Of course, no matter how you and your child decide to use the Halloween candy, the most important thing is to brush and floss thoroughly after consuming candy. This clears away sugars and acids from the mouth, helping to keep the teeth safe from decay.
