What Are Dentures Made Of?

What Are Dentures Made Of?We make it our aim to give patients bright and healthy smiles, no matter the current state of their teeth. Even patients who are missing some – or all – of their teeth can have the ability to have their smiles restored with restorative dentistry like the dentures that we offer for our Venice patients. Dentures are an excellent choice for tooth replacement as they’re now much more comfortable and effective than ever. But when we talk about dentures, there’s one question that gets commonly asked about them: “What are dentures actually made of?” We’ll be glad to answer that question for you!

The Most Common Types of Dentures

There are actually two main types of dentures that are frequently used, each one being made out of differing materials. These include those that are made out of acrylic resin and those that are made out of porcelain. They’re both highly regarded and have their own unique advantages.

Acrylic Resin Dentures

Acrylic resin is actually now the highest on-demand material for dentures and for good reason too! It’s the easiest material to adjust and generally fits perfectly into the desired space. Because of this, it often provides the most comfort for a patient. Not to mention, this type of material is less expensive when compared to porcelain. However, these dentures tend to wear down quicker over time. It’s likely that they may need to be replaced within five years, but with proper care, they can last much longer.

Porcelain Dentures

The strength of porcelain is literally in its strength and durability! Porcelain dentures are harder and can last much longer than other types of dentures. Not only do they offer that as a benefit, but the ceramic material that they’re made out of has translucent features that give it an attractive appearance that often matches the look and feel of a person’s natural teeth. The main downside to these types of dentures, however, is that they’re typically more expensive than other options. Porcelain is also better used for full dentures as opposed to partials since they can wear down natural teeth if they rub against them.
